The truth about Ayurveda is that it is governed by the fact of what we eat, how we live, what environment we live in and the state of our mental health. Ayurveda tells us about the framework within which we can modify our lifestyle to optimize our bodily functions. Ayurveda teaches us how to age with dignity and grace, as Ayurveda emphasizes the role of mental health in maintaining physical health.
Here are 10 Ayurvedic principles you can add to your daily routine:
Wake Up Early in the Morning
It is good to wake up before the sun rises, when there are loving (sattvic) qualities in nature that bring peace of mind and freshness to the senses. Sunrise varies according to the seasons, but on average vata people should get up about 6 a.m., pitta people by 5:30 a.m., and kapha by 4:30 a.m. Right after waking, look at your hands for a few moments, then gently move them over your face and chest down to the waist. This cleans the aura.
Our bodies are designed to produce the sleep-inducing hormone melatonin after dark. The sleep-wake cycle in our body is regulated by our circadian rhythms, our body’s internal clock, which works with the light and darkness around us. When our retina perceives light, it signals the Suprachiasmatic Nucleus (our body’s biological master clock) to suppress melatonin production, causing wakefulness. We are naturally attuned to being more responsive and alert during morning hours and sluggish and sleepy at night.
Say a Prayer before Leaving the Bed
“Dear God, you are inside of me, within my very breath, within each bird, each mighty mountain.
Your sweet touch reaches everything and I am well protected.
Thank you God for this beautiful day before me.
May joy, love, peace and compassion be part of my life and all those around me on this day.
I am healing and I am healed.”
After this prayer touch the ground with your right hand, then the same hand to the forehead, with great love and respect to Mother Earth.
Drink Water in the Morning
Drink a glass of room temperature water, preferably from a pure copper cup filled the night before. This washes the GI track, flushes the kidneys, and stimulates peristalsis. It is not a good idea to start the day with tea or coffee, as this drains kidney energy, stresses the adrenals, causes constipation, and is habit-forming.
Drinking water on an empty stomach provides many great health benefits. Staying hydrated is great for your skin, your metabolism and your energy levels. There are even more added benefits to drinking water on an empty stomach, first thing in the morning. Drinking sixteen ounces of water upon waking up can contribute to noticeable and welcomed changes to your body.
Include Ayurveda Eating
If you want to stay ‘disease-free’ then have a close look at what you eat. Emphasize more on fresh, seasonal, organic fruits and vegetables. Stay away from oily-junk food, as far as possible. If you include Ayurveda eating in your diet, then your body will start developing energy and help to clear toxins.
The Ayurvedic diet is a component of Ayurveda and has been practiced for thousands of years. It’s based on determining your dominant dosha and eating specific foods to promote balance between all three doshas.
Walk For Better Life
Go for a morning walk or just walk to take a break from a very stressful day at work. Walking is one of the best forms of exercise. It provides mental, physical and emotional peace without straining your body.
Walking for 30 minutes a day or more on most days of the week is a great way to improve or maintain your overall health. If you can’t manage 30 minutes a day, remember ‘even a little is good, but more is better’. Walking with others can turn exercise into an enjoyable social occasion.
Make a Schedule
Construct a schedule of all the things that you will be doing throughout the day and stick to it. Sticking to a planned schedule will help to avoid disturbance and will create a mental, physical and emotional balance in your body.
Even if you believe that you have a tedious and repetitive job, there are still a variety of tasks that deserve your attention throughout the day. But, how can you possibly devote the right amount of attention to every one of these jobs? You move forward by creating a schedule for your most important tasks. It Not only will that guarantee that you’ll get everything done that you want to, but it will also create a balance in your life.
Evacuation
Sit, or better squat, on the toilet and have a bowel movement. Improper digestion of the previous night’s meal or lack of sound sleep can prevent this. However the water, followed by sitting on the toilet at a set time each day, helps to regulate bowel movements. Alternate nostril breathing may also help. After evacuation wash the anal orifice with warm water, then the hands with soap.
Scrape your Tongue
Gently scrape the tongue from the back forward, until you have scraped the whole surface for 7-14 strokes. This stimulates the internal organs, helps digestion, and removes dead bacteria. Ideally, vata can use a gold scraper, pitta a silver one, and kapha copper. Stainless steel can be used by all people.
Tongue scraping is a fast way to remove extra particles — including the ones that cause bad breath — from the surface of your tongue. It’s done with a small, slightly rounded tool made from plastic or metal.
Bond With Nature
When you have a break, instead of spending time with your gadget spend time with flowers and trees. If you give up your gadgets for a day and surrender yourself to the nature, then the sense of connection with Mother Nature will soothe you and make you forget all your worries, problems and stress.
“Nature is the art of god.” It holds the power of healing internally. Mother nature’s touch helps reduce stress, improves mood and the cognitive performance. Since time immemorial human beings have continuously been interacting with nature.
Restful Sleep is Important
Our body needs time to rejuvenate and to detoxify, and the best time for this process is sleeping. When we get good sleep, our inner cells work in harmony to strengthen our immune system and circulate vibrant energy throughout our body.
To get good sleep, try taking a warm bath before bed and use essential oils such as lavender or sandalwood to calm you down. Complement this with slow and deep breathing.
