Sun safety is always in season. It’s important to protect your skin from sun damage throughout the year, no matter the weather. Why? Sun exposure can cause sunburn, skin aging (such as skin spots, wrinkles, or “leathery skin”), eye damage, and skin cancer, the most common of all cancers.
Sun damage to the body is caused by invisible ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Sunburn is a type of skin damage caused by the sun. Tanning is also a sign of the skin reacting to potentially damaging UV radiation by producing additional pigmentation that provides it with some, but often not enough, protection against sunburn.
The Benefits of Sunblock
Your skin is your largest organ and has essential functions such as guarding your body against germs as well as helping to regulate your body’s temperature. While your skin also offers your body protection from the sun’s rays, that doesn’t mean you should go out without giving your skin proper protection in return. Without sunblock, your skin is vulnerable to a host of problems. Here are four reasons why you should use sunblock daily.
Decrease Risk of Cancer
The number one reason you should prioritize wearing sunblock is that it helps to protect you from developing skin cancer. Daily SPF use, even if it is cloudy or raining, can help protect your skin from harmful rays that cause cancer. It is especially important to protect your skin from melanoma, which is the most deadly type of skin cancer.
Protect from Sunburn and Heat Exhaustion
Most people wear sunblock to protect their skin from painful, red, sunburns; however, did you know that sunblock can also help protect you from heat exhaustion or heat stroke? Heat exhaustion and heat stroke symptoms include nausea, muscle cramps and, in extreme cases, can even result in brain damage. To avoid these, you should always wear adequate sunblock, find shade if you’ve been in direct sunlight for an extended period of time, and be sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day.
Limit the Appearance of Sunspots
Being exposed to the sun’s UV rays can also cause sunspots (also known as “age spots” or “liver spots”), which is a culprit in increasing the look of aging. Sunspots are caused by hyperpigmentation of the skin and are typically flat areas of discolored skin that can be different shades of brown. Sunspots can appear in the following areas of the body:
- Face
- Shoulders
- Arms
- Back
- Back of the hands
Avoid Aging Signs
Sun damage is one of the most common causes of premature aging, as sun exposure causes discoloration, fine lines, and wrinkles. Discolored and leathery-looking skin is typically the result of excess sun exposure over the years. To avoid these signs of aging and look more youthful, wear SPF daily.
Remember, sunblock should be applied every two hours, every day, regardless of whether you’ll be spending most of your time inside or out. When venturing outside, don’t just rely on your sunblock, seek shade and wear wide-brimmed hats and other UV-protective clothing as well.
